Blake and Alexis Rayon arrived in Atlanta five years ago on the cusp of the city’s culinary and cultural renaissance. Coming from Miami, their standards for food and fun were high. “It’s a big part of our culture,” says Blake. “We like to have a good time.” They dove into the Atlanta food scene and the rest is history. We asked them about their favorite after-market spots.

Alexis’ Mood: Afraid of Commitment

Ponce City Market is such a great option if you’re unsure of what you want to eat or where you want to go. Every price point, every type of food, more casual, more fine dining – it’s all there. Get a pop-tini from King of Pops or a craft beer from The Tap on Ponce. Then you can do burgers from H&F Burger or chicken from next door at Hop’s if you want super casual. Or for a mid-century throwback, head upstairs to The Mercury for swanky cocktails and a sit-down dinner.”

“Grab dinner at Krog Street Market in Inman Park. From there, head to Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room & Ping Pong Emporium and keep an eye out for celebrities. If you love hip hop or you love EDM, go across the street to the Sound Table. If you’re feeling hip and you want to party, go down the road to Mother. And if you really want to see Atlanta’s Dirty South go to Harold’s Chicken & Ice Bar. Right next door to that is Noni’s, which is a really fun late night spot.”

“We always take people to Park Tavern. It has the nicest views of Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Skyline. Take a stroll around the park or check out the stunning Atlanta Botanical Garden. Then head to nearby Hobnob for drinks. Across the street, Varuni Napoli has pizza that is to die for and a shady little patio perfect for a spring day.”

Blake’s Mood: Uptown Attitude
“Head to Umi for sushi and start with drinks at the bar. These bartenders are top notch and masters of their trade. If you like highball cocktails and want to step out of your norm, ask for them to make you a Mezcal Old Fashioned. Get ready for smoky and sweet delight to roll down your tongue. Or, for something more casual, hit up Shake Shack and try the ‘Shroom Burger. It will change your life.”

Texas retailer hitches her fortune to AmericasMart

Sangeeta Gupta, the owner of Modelli Creations, was just starting out and Carley Seale, then a rookie retailer, fell in love with the products. Today Modelli is one of the many wholesalers that anchors Seale’s The Gypsy Wagon, which has two locations in Texas: Dallas and Austin. An additional operation, ROAM Fine Goods, makes up the vibrant retail selection in Crested Butte, Colo.

The Gypsy Wagon got its start in 2007 in the middle of the Great Recession. But the economy did not faze Seale who was bitten by the retail bug in high school. Seale left her job as vice president of a sales team for a medical devices company and opened the first Gypsy Wagon in Dallas. Since then, the business has grown, employing 31 people across all three locations.

The stores’ vibe is “very wanderlust and free-spirited,” with just hints of the South. Not having a “lick of retail experience” Seale wanted to create a store that stocked reasonably priced goods for everyone, not realizing how difficult that would be to implement. The name The Gypsy Wagon has given her room to grow and Seale, whose husband Johnny, is operations chief, says every product is selected to incite an emotional response. Starting with home decor and gifts, the stores have added apparel and footwear under the guidance of three full-time buyers including Seale.

Selling a variety of home, gift and apparel items from Paddywax candles to Flying Bird Botanical teas and dresses from Show Me Your Mumu, The Gypsy Wagon has a dedicated customer base and devoted fans on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

and believes AmericasMart has the most to offer in one stop. “I shop Atlanta, New York and Dallas but if I had to pick one it would be Atlanta because it has everything—the southern feel, the latest products. It has the most to offer in one location,” Seale says.

Seale’s competitive streak means that she’s always an early bird at Cash and Carry. “If there’s something that’s one of a kind I want to be the one to get it,” she says. Seale doesn’t have a set strategy for shopping at AmericasMart and appreciates the sense of discovery that comes from just taking it all in. “I like it to be a little unstructured because that’s when your mind is open to seeing new things,” Seale says.

That’s how Seale discovers great product finds including Modelli at AmericasMart years ago. “Sangeeta keeps bringing awesome stuff, and it’s neat that you can cultivate that kind of relationship,” Seale says of Modelli’s owner.

“That’s why you have to keep going too, because you don’t know who will be there
for the first time,” Seale advises, “You really don’t want to miss anything.”

The Retail Meets Design Exhibition features vignettes curated by the Southeast’s top design retailers who created their spaces with products sourced at AmericasMart. The spaces express each designer’s unique take on how interior design influences retail to showcase that it’s all here in Atlanta.

A Mix of Colors: It’s not just all white anymore… brides are straying away from the traditional white wedding gown, and going for something with a little more color. If you are in the market for a wedding dress today, you may find it hard to find an all white dress. We are seeing a lot of cream and off-white, as well as very light blue and even hints of black for a little bit of edge!

Expect Embellishments: Embellishments can make a bland dress beautiful in just seconds, and we have seen them all over the runway for 2016 bridal. Expect to see pearls and metallic stones gracing the bodes of many dresses.
