Parents who grew up in the 1980s should be completely comfortable with the choices they’ll have when shopping for their kids this spring and summer.
The same goes for the little ladies with styles worthy of the Bangles, Diane Chambers or the young Madonna. Preppy skirts and blouses, sport shorts, lace dresses, graphic sweatshirts and floral headbands are just a few of the options that will be in stores for the season.
While youngsters often claim to want to be and look grown-up, adults know kids need their own versions of any style that’s both appropriate and more resilient.
As fabrics have improved, retro looks are more durable than ever, especially for childrenswear. Softer denim, washed cotton, washable silk, pliable neoprene and durable jersey are some of the seasonal materials adding to the tactile interest of the collections and making them wearable in the real world of scooter races, sand boxes and monkey bars.
