Changa Named ‘Best of Show’ at September Markets

The Atlanta Fall Gift & Home Furnishings Market together with The Atlanta Gourmet Market closed yesterday, ending the three-day Market run. At Market, one spectacular company was recognized as the Best of Show for outstanding visual display in the gift and gourmet temporaries. Out of all the temporary booths, this company stood out above the rest. The Best of Atlanta winner demonstrated excellence in visual display above all others across the entire temporary gift and gourmet categories-staged on floor 7 in Building 1.

A first-time exhibitor at AmericasMart, the winner took its booth to a new level, using only handmade product created by friends and family. Featured product included handcrafted bark wood frames, flowers in a beautiful arrangement from a friend’s yard, rod-iron displays, handsewn drapery and table linens and custom clipboards. The 2010 Best of Show award was presented to the Changa, a new line of changeable jewelry headquartered in Hendersonville, NC.

“Small and Beautiful” Jewelry Company Contributes to Global Village

Part of the Global Village concept of products created by local craftspeople to support local economies, Kazuri’s hand-painted, ceramic jewelry is made in Nairobi, Kenya. “Kazuri” is the Swahili word for “small and beautiful.”

Founded by Lady Susan Wood in 1975, by teaching two women the painstaking process of making ceramic beads using clay taken from near the base of Mt. Kenya. The company now employs more than 350 women, providing good salaries, excellent working conditions and a sense of self-sufficiency in a country where financial security for women is rare.

The women earn enough to pay for their children’s education in a positive environment that includes an on-site clinic, educational seminars and access to a savings and loan to help them achieve goals such as buying housing, land and cattle.

Every bead used to make neclaces, bracelets and earrings is shaped by hand without using molds or forms before being polished, kiln-fired, painted and fired again before being strung. Kazuri designs are created to work with fashions around the world. As word of the company inspires success, a growth plan is already in place — at least 20 women are constantly in training to be ready for full-time employment as demand warrants.

The 4^th floor temporaries at Atlanta Apparel feature beautiful jewelry, handbags, scarves, hosiery and shoes, contemporary casual and comfort shoes. Some of the top sellers on the 4^th floor for jewelry and handbags are Sue Cox, Ethel & Myrtle, Susan Shaw, Bonnie Leigh Accessories, S & J international, MJK Global, Anthony Alexander, Artistic Expressions, Clay Cox and many more. These vendors have great wholesale price points and a wide variety of product.

A few other must see jewelry lines are Crown Pearls, Hila, Nikita Lynn, Zad, Suzy-Shaw Berardo, Seasons, Pretty Persuasions and Jimmy Crystal.

Scarves continue to be a popular trend, and dozens of Atlanta Apparel exhibitors carry the popular product in a plethora of colors, styles and patterns. VSA Accessories, stationed in a bright pink booth, is an anchor booth on the floor. The scarves are very hip and classic with great price points, too. Some new vendors seen in August for scarves are Siam Secrets, Unique World Trends, Magic Scarf and Look from London. Look from London also carries contemporary leggings and hosiery, and has created quite a name for itself in the fashion industry.

Also on the 4^th floor, check out all the hot shoes and well recognized brands. Contemporary lines include Jessica Simpson, Naughty Monkey, Blowfish, Bronx, Rampage, Restricted, Volatile and Zigi NY.

Great new lines that can’t be missed include Sperry Top-sider, Alegria, Born, Sugar, Athena Alexander, Callisto, Novela and Jack Rogers.

June Apparel Market Wrap-Up

AmericasMart turned up the heat at the June Apparel Market with the debut of sizzling new lines and hot celebrity appearances.

The 3^rd Floor Young Contemporary category continued its development with several new lines, including Freeway, Black, Inc., Belinda, Genesis, Kan Can Jean and One is Greater than None and more.

The June Market was a hot spot for celebrities as well, with appearances from stylists to musical groups. Mark-Alan Harmon, celebrity stylist and television personality, came all the way from Hollywood to introduce his new line of closet accessories, appropriately named “Closetry.”

Another celebrity favorite, manicurist to the stars Myrdith Leon-McCormack, set up shop during Market to pamper buyers with free, celeb-worthy manicures while promoting her new line of “celebrity inspired” nail lacquers.

Other special attendees included members of the rap group Nappy Roots and Bravo Television stars, Lisa Wu Hartwell and Sheree Whitfield, from “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.”
