True Grits: One Woman’s AmericasMart Success Story

For 22 years, Diane Pfeifer, creator of popular Grits Bits,  has  called AmericasMart Atlanta her Market home. Her story begins the day after her honeymoon in 1988, at a January Atlanta Apparel grits bits 1rMarket. While she was helping her sister-in-law with ajewelry line, she was introduced to the place where she’d bring her own company, Strawberry Patch.

Over more than two decades, Pfeifer has some incredible memories at AmericasMart. Her first daughter Jennica came to a show at only 9 days old and even took her first steps down an apparel aisle. Now 20 years old, Jennica works Markets when she’s home from college.

Professionally, Pfeifer debuted her all-grits cookbook, “Gone with the Grits” at AmericasMart in 1992,  in the Stationery Temps using only a crayon colored mock-up. On a whim, she displayed it in Gourmet Temps and after booming results, she’s maintained a booth there ever since.

grits bits 2Pfeifer’s story started back in St. Louis, where she was born and raised. She credits not being southern as the reason she  thinks of so many different grits recipes. The book was inspired after she joked in a Hollywood sushi bar that southerners made their sushi with grits instead of rice, which sparked the idea of creating a fun, all-grits cookbook. The next morning in an L.A. cafe, she was writing recipe ideas when she heard someone trying to order grits. She laughingly told the customer what she was working on, and he asked if he could sit with her. The patron turned out to be Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band, and they shared a two-hour breakfast, which ultimately led to the creation of her cookbook. That book recently topped a million copies sold.

On the advice of some AmericasMart buyers 10 years ago, she invented Grits Bits, bite-size cheese snacks and cookies baked with grits. The four flavors are a big hit in southern gourmet and bridal baskets, airport and hotel shops, and gourmet/gift shops.

Thanks to her inspiration, consumers who can’t buy grits just anywhere can at least cook them or enjoy a quick grits snack no matter where they live. Check out http://www.GritsBits.com for more information.
